A Super AI has Beaten the World’s Best DOTA 2 Players

It doesn’t matter how good a professional gamer is, there will always be a computer that’s a little better. A team of AI bots has beat the world’s best DOTA 2 players.

Originally reported by The Verge, artificial intelligence research organization OpenAI has developed their own DOTA 2 team, known at the OpenAI 5. Back in April, they held a public event where people can play against the team. This included a match against the Defense of the Ancients, a team of the best players in the world.

OpenAI had taken to using real-time strategy games and multiplayer battle arenas to test how machine learning evolves to certain situations. DOTA 2 is a common choice due to the large list of characters and the complex skill trees therein. Their OpenAI Five team is a machine that has played 45,000 years of DOTA 2 games over the last ten months, according to co-founder and CTO Greg Brockman.

The actual game was the best of three matches between the AI and the humans. The first match took about 30 minutes, won by the AI. It used late-game tactics early on, such as resurrecting a fallen immediately. The second game was won, again by the AI, even faster as it applied what the humans called “very aggressive strategies.”

Unfortunately, OpenAI has stated that the technology will most likely not be made public. So this will likely be its only public appearance. But man, what an appearance to make.

If you want to see the game for yourself, the entire event was broadcast on the OpenAI Twitch channel. They also have a number of past broadcasts of the AI playing against public players.
