Commandos lives on! Kalypso is expanding and it intends to start that expansion with a new Commandos game for next-gen consoles.
According to a report by Gamesindustry.biz, Kalypso Media Group has announced plans to expand and build a studio based in Frankfurt, Germany. The studio will be lead by Jürgen Reusswig, known for his work on the Anno series. The first thing they’re going to work on is a new Commandos game because it’s “a great, globally recognized brand.”
Commandos is a series of World War 2 era RTS games that focus on the efforts of the British Commandos with a focus on stealth. Originally owned by Eidos Interactive, the intellectual property was later purchased by Kalypso Media Group with the intent of an eventual revival. It looks like this is that revival.
Since the studio has not been formed yet, development on Commandos 6 has not begun. And with 2020 being the year that game companies begin releasing the next generation of consoles, we can safely assume that any console editions of the game will be on those instead. All the same, it has been about 13 years since Commandos: Strike Force had released, so fans have been waiting a long while already.
For those who can’t wait, fear not! There is an HD remake of Commandos 2 in the works and currently planned for release in January 2020 for PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
